LORNA MUIR NIMMO (1920 - 1990)

Lorna Muir Nimmo was a pioneering, award-winning Modernist. Raised in Katoomba, Nimmo was perhaps the most highly regarded female artist of her time. She was the first female to win the Wynne Prize in 1941 (Finalist 3 times), and rose to prominence during WWII. She regularly exhibited at the Society Of Artists & Australian Watercolour Institute and was the first female President of the latter. She studied at the Courtauld Institute and Slade Institute in London and in Paris in the 1950s. Her works were purchased consistently by National Galleries in the 1940s, and works painted in 1947 of similar landscapes are represented at the AGNSW and National Gallery.
