HAL HOLMAN (1922 - 2006)

Haldane Sinclair Holman OL OAM was a respected Australian painter, set designer and sculptor. He worked as a set designer for several Australian productions after WWII, and was honoured for his work in Papua New Guinea (he worked as artistic director for the Government and designed their National flag) and his services to art and design in Australia. This work was completed in the old mining town, Hill End, an important artist colony which was established by Russell Drysdale & Donald Friend in the late 40s, and saw an influx of famous Australian artists such as Margaret Olley, Jeffrey Smart, Jean Bellette, John Olsen, John Firth-Smith and Brett Whiteley. The raw, earthy palette of this piece is reminiscent of Drysdale & Friend's paintings of their Hill End period.
