JOHNNY FRIEDLANDER (1912 - 1992)

Johnny Friedlander was a pioneering, award-winning German/Polish artist and printmaker. Trained at the Academy of Arts in Breslau under famous German Expressionist, Otto Mueller, he held his first exhibitions at the J. Sandel Gallery and at the Dresden Art Museum. After spending two years in a concentration camp, he settled in Czechoslovakia, becoming one of the most important, influential printmakers of the 20th century. He held many successful solo shows worldwide, and a large retrospective in 1978 at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. This impressive etching and aquatint, which reminds me of Joan Miro, was produced at the peak of his career.
