ARTHUR McINTYRE (1945 - 2003)

Arthur McIntyre was an award-winning Australian artist and acclaimed critic. He studied at the National Art School and Alexander Mackie College from 1963-66, and art history at the University of Sydney 1971-73. As an artist he primarily worked in the media of collage, drawing and painting. Many of his works were controversial for their sexual content (often referencing his homosexuality), utilizing collage elements sourced from pornographic magazines. This impressive work comes from his 'Survival & Decay' series in collage which spanned from 1975-1979, featuring strong themes of erotica and pornography, juxtaposed with ordinary, domestic images and iconography. The series was inspired by the work of Dadaists Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara & Kurt Schwitters from the 1920s. Despite dying prematurely, he won countless awards for his art and is represented in most Australian State gallery collections, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the National Gallery of Australia (who has more than 100 of his works).
