HENNING DAMGAARD-SORENSEN (1928 - 2013)

Henning Damgaard-Sorensen was a well respected Danish abstract, mid century modern painter & sculptor. He debuted in 1950 at the Artists' exhibition and became a member of the artist group Grønningen in 1965, for which he has been chairman 1967-89. His work is particularly linked to architecture and to a lesser extent for the production of single paintings and sculptures. His works are combinations of painting, sculpture, relief and mosaic, but compositions are based on the use of the geometric-abstract imagery and the strong emphasis on the powerful and decorative. He was awarded the Eckersberg medal in 1979 and the New Carlsberg Foundation's major travel grant 1994.
