SAMUEL JOHN BARNES (1847 - 1901)

Samuel John Barnes was an important 19th century British landscape painter. He was born in Birmingham where he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and later in London. Some of Barnes's best paintings were of Scottish highland landscapes including highland cattle and red deer.  He painted in the vicinity of Royal Deesside (Balmoral Castle) where his paintings were highly regarded and collected by Royalty, including Princess Of Wales, Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1884 & 1886. His work is represented in several National Galleries, Royal Collections & important private collections. This work is reminiscent of contemporary British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, and contemporary Australian artist, Tim Storrier.
